Traveler’s Insurance for Surfing Trips
Planning for the unexpected in remote locations
Travel insurance is one of the most overlooked parts of surf travel — until something goes wrong.
Most surf trips go smoothly, but injuries, infections, cancellations, lost boards, or medical emergencies can happen anywhere, especially in remote destinations. If you are surfing in isolated areas or traveling internationally, having a plan before something happens is extremely important.
There is also an important difference between:
Comprehensive travel insurance — covers things like trip cancellation, delays, baggage, lost boards, and interruptions
Medical travel insurance — focuses primarily on emergency medical care, hospitalization, evacuation, and injury-related expenses while abroad
Many surfers assume they are automatically covered internationally through their normal health insurance, but this is often limited or not accepted in remote locations.
For remote surf travel — especially destinations involving boats, reefs, motorcycles, or limited medical access — emergency evacuation coverage can become extremely important.
Personally, I like AIG Travel
Guard Insurance because they offer multiple coverage options that can fit different trip styles and budgets. However, if you are traveling super remote and/or are barrell chasing consider Global Rescue.
One important thing many travelers do not realize: if you want more comprehensive trip protection, it is usually best to purchase insurance early — ideally shortly after booking your trip and at minimum before departure.
From a Surfer + Medical Perspective
From a medical perspective, I have seen how quickly a surf injury or illness abroad can become stressful when medical access, transportation, or evacuation is limited.
From a surfer’s perspective, nobody wants to think about emergencies while planning a trip to somewhere like the Mentawais, Bali, or other remote destinations — but serious injuries do happen. Head injuries, reef trauma, infections, and motorcycle accidents are all realities of surf travel.
Travel insurance is one of those things you hope to never use, but if you need it, it can make an enormous difference.
