Planning for the unexpected

Whether you’re heading to Bali, the Mentawais, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, or Fiji, one of the most overlooked parts of trip planning is preparing for the unexpected.

As both a surfer and medical professional, I’ve seen how quickly injuries, infections, flight disruptions, and emergency evacuations can turn a dream trip into a stressful situation.

This guide reviews the two travel protection options often used:

Option 1: IMG Travel Insurance

Best For

  • International surf travel

  • Higher medical coverage limits

  • Families

  • Longer trips

Highlights

  • Emergency medical coverage

  • Medical evacuation benefits

  • Trip interruption protection

  • Multiple plan options

Bottom Line

IMG offers some of the strongest medical-focused travel insurance options available and can be a good choice for surfers who prioritize healthcare protection while abroad.

  • Remote Indonesia

  • Expeditions

  • Locations with limited medical access

Highlights

  • Field rescue

  • Medical evacuation coordination

  • Security evacuation services

  • Destination intelligence

Bottom Line

Global Rescue is different from traditional travel insurance. It focuses on rescue and evacuation services when things go seriously wrong in remote locations.

From a Surfer + Medical Perspective

As both a surfer and nurse practitioner, I look at travel protection through two lenses:

  1. What happens if you need medical care overseas?

  2. What happens if you need help getting out?

For most surf trips, traditional travel insurance is enough.

For remote destinations such as the Mentawais, outer Indonesian islands, or other locations with limited medical resources, evacuation planning becomes just as important as medical coverage.

That’s why I generally recommend considering a combination of:

  • IMG for stronger medical protection

  • Global Rescue for evacuation and rescue support

The right choice depends on your destination, risk tolerance, and trip style.
